Alhijra has since its establishment in 1993 serving the Somali refugees and asylum seekers who were arriving in the UK in massive numbers fleeing from the civil war in their country. Those new arrivals mainly consisted of mothers and children with little or no education. Most of new Somali refugees being not conversant in English, it was very hard for them to understand the system and use the public services including Health, Education and Welfare Benefits. Somali community particularly women are disadvantaged and suffer from multiplicity of barriers be it cultural or language. Unlike other African communities, the Somali community has a unique culture and language not shared by any other community. This fact aggravates the isolation and exclusion problems of this community. Many Somalis are disabled and many parents have disabled children. Somali children are underachieving in schools and some young adults have been involved in crimes. Such complex is the nature of Alhijra’s service users and such difficult but necessary are its duties. In an attempt to address these issues, Alhijra Somali Community, provides a range of services including educational, advice and guidance, sports and leisure and social and cultural to the community with a limited funding. |
